Primary Dentition Flashcards
When do the central incisors usually erupt?
6-12 months
When do the lateral incisors usually erupt?
7-13 months
When do the 1st molars usually erupt?
12-19 months
When do the canines usually erupt?
16-22 months
When do the 2nd molars usually erupt?
21-33 months
A variation of how many months is normal regarding primary eruption?
4-5 months
Describe root formation in the primary dentition
14-15 months after eruption
completed by 1.5-3 years of age
What are primate spaces?
spaces between teeth due to jaw growth
provides room for permanent incisors and canines
Where are the primate spaces normally seen?
between mx lateral incisors and canine or between mn canine and 1st molar
What is leeway space?
- the difference in space between the primary canines plus molars and the permanent canines and premolars, since the primary molars are wider than premolars
- allows extra space for eruption of permanent canines and premolars
When does root resorption occur?
2-3 years after root completion
When does mixed dentition usually occur?
between 6-12 years of age
List the set traits of primary teeth
-overall smaller proportions
-whiter in color
-thinner enamel and dentin (less mineralized and prone to attrition)
-constricted cervical line and occlusal table
-prominent buccal cervical ridge on molars
-molars wider mesiodistally
Describe the roots of primary teeth
-narrower at CEJ
-anterior roots bend facially
-shorter root trunks
-flared roots
Describe the pulp chamber of primary teeth
-larger in relation to the crown
-higher and more extreme pulp horns
