Dentition ID Systems Flashcards
Heterodont
dentition made up of different types of teeth. examples/ humans, fish
Homodont
dentition made up of one type of tooth with the same function. examples/ reptiles, alligators
Haplodont
dentition made up of molar teeth with simple conical crowns and no tubercles, ridges, or cusps
Monophyodont
1 set of teeth
Diphyodont
having 2 sets of teeth (like us humans)
Polyphyodont
having more than 2 sets of teeth. examples/ reptiles, sharks, snakes, elephants
Which type of teeth is not seen in primary dentition
Premolars
Mixed dentition ends when…
the last deciduous tooth is lost
succedaneous teeth
permanent teeth that replace/succeed deciduous (primary) teeth
Nonsuccedaneous teeth
permanent MOLARS that do not replace/succeed deciduous (primary) teeth
How many teeth are in each arch (maxillary and mandibular)
Primary: 10 in each arch
Permanent: 16 in each arch
How many teeth are in each arch (maxillary and mandibular)
Primary: 10 in each arch
Permanent: 16 in each arch
Each permanent dentition quadrant has what teeth
Central incisor
Lateral incisor
Canine
First and second premolar
First, second, and third molar
Each primary dentition quadrant has what type of teeth
two incisors (central and lateral)
canine
first and second molar
What is the dental formula for each dentition (primary and permanent)?
Primary: 2I IC 2M
Permanent: 2I 1C 2PM 3M
How would you name/code tooth number 8?
Permanent (dentition) maxillary (arch) right (quadrant) central (type) incisor (class)
List the 6 sextants
-Upper right posterior
-Maxillary anterior
-Upper left posterior
-Lower right posterior
-Mandibular anterior
-Lower left posterior
Explain the Universal System of numbering
The numbering system for teeth that is primarily used in the US. Starting at the upper right third molar, then dropping down to mandibular left third molar and continuing to mandibular right third molar.
Permanent: numbered 1-32
Primary: lettered A-T
Explain Palmer Notation numbering system
Primarily used in the UK and in orthodontics, palmer notation uses symbols and numbers with the quadrant bracket symboled with a “half box”. Starting at the central incisor, permanent teeth are numbered 1-8. Primary are lettered A-E
Explaining the Federation Dentaire Internationale (FDI) System
Primarily used in countries across Europe, the FDI system uses 2 digit numbers, with the first number representing the quadrant (permanent 1-4, primary 5-8 starting at maxillary right quadrant) and the second number representing the tooth (permanent 1-8, primary 1-5, starting at the central incisor of that quadrant)
