Primary And Caucus System Flashcards
Huh?
Explain the difference between Primaries and Caucuses?
Caucuses are generally less popular than Primaries which results in strong ideological attendance which often leads to strongly ideological candidates being selected. E.g. Bernie Sanders won 68% in the caucuses in Kansas and 82% in Alaska with very liberal views.
Primaries have two specific functions: to show the popularity of presidential candidates and to choose delegates to attend the National Party Conventions
What is a Primary?
An election to choose a party’s candidate for an elected office such as Presidency or Member of the House.
What is a Caucus?
They are held by very few states- a meeting for the selection of a party’s candidate for an elected office- these are held in states which are geographically large but have low population sizes such as Iowa and Nevada.
