pressure Flashcards
what is pressure
a measure of how much force is put on a certain area
what is the equation for pressure
pressure = force over areas
what is pressure measured in
pascals, Pa or Newtons/metres squared ,N/
what is 1pa equal to
1N/m*2
pressure increases with what else
depth
why does pressure increase as depth increases
because the weight of water above has increased
what is upthrust
the overall upwards force of on an object in water, due to the pressure of water being greater at the bottom of the object that at the top
why does an apple float in water
because upthrust = weight
why does a potato sink in water
it sinks as upthrust is leass than the potatoes weight
what is the atmosphere
the layer of air that surrounds the earth
is there more or less atmospheric at the top of a mountain
lower atmospheric pressure
why is their less atmosperic pressure the higher you go
because the higher you go the less atmospere above you so less weight is pushing down on you
is their more or less atmospheric pressure the lower you go and why
more as the there more atmosphere pushing down on you and there is also more weight pushing down on you
what is gas pressure caused by
particles hitting a surface
what two things can be done to increase pressure
increase temperature to make particles move faster
reduce volume so particles hit wall more often
