Present Continuous is used:
1) when something is happening at this very moment, the action is happening at the time of speaking:
+ now, at the moment
2) when something is happening in a period around now, but not necessarily at the time of speaking:
+ today, this week, now
3) when we talk about a changing situation happening around now.
1) Please don’t make so much noise. I’m working.
‘Where’s Margaret?’ ‘She’s having a bath now.’
Let’s go out now. The sun is shining.
I’m tired. I’m going to bed now. Goodnight.
2) Catherine wants to work in Italy, so she is learning Italian. (but perhaps she isn’t
learning Italian exactly at the time of speaking)
Some friends of mine are building their own house. They hope it will be finished before
next summer.
‘You’re working hard today.’ ‘Yes, I have a lot to do.’
‘Is Susan working this week?’ “No, she’s no holiday.’
3) My son is getting taller.

The following verbs are not used in continuous tenses. They are not action verbs. They are called stative verbs (stavová slovesa).

You cannot say “I am knowing’ or ‘they are liking’; you can only say ‘I know’, ‘they like’.
