Articles 1 Flashcards
1)
John:
I had a sandwich and an apple for lunch.
The sandwich wasn’t very good but the apple was nice.
John says ‘a sandwich’, ‘an apple’ because this is the first time he talks about them.
John says ‘the sandwich’, ‘the apple’ because his friend knows exactly which sandwich and which apple he talks about - the sandwich and the apple he had for lunch.
For example:
A man and a woman were sitting opposite me. The man was American but I think the woman was British.
When we were on holiday, we stayed at a hotel. Sometimes we had our evening meal at the hotel and sometimes we went to a restaurant.
- We use ‘a’ or ‘an’ (before a,o,u,e,i) with singular countable nouns about which we speak for the first time. With uncountable nouns we usually use no article (zero article) or we can also use ‘some’.
