Prepositions Flashcards
Place
Prepositions of place are used to show the exact position or particular place where something/one is. E.g. The cup is on the table.
Movement
Prepositions of movement show movement from one place to another place. These prepositions always describe movement and we usually use them with verbs of motion. E.g. He walked around the playground.
Time
A preposition of time is a preposition that allows you to discuss a specific time period such as a date on the calendar, one of the days of the week, or the actual time something takes place. Prepositions of time are the same words as prepositions of place, however they are used in a different way. You can easily distinguish these prepositions, as they always discuss times rather than places. E.g. He always visits on Tuesdays at 6.00pm sharp.
Direction
Prepositions of direction show where or in which direction something moves. Some examples are to, on, onto, in, into, towards, through, etc. are used to describe the direction. These prepositions are most often used with verbs of motion and are found after the verb.
Dependant Prepositions
In the English language there are many verbs, nouns and adjectives which are followed by the same specific prepositions. The prepositions are called dependent because their choice depends on the particular word
and its meaning. E.g. You are always complaining about something. I cannot depend on you in this case.
