Determiners Flashcards
Articles
An article is a word used to modify a noun, which is a person, place, object, or idea. Technically, an article is an adjective, which is any word that modifies a noun. Usually adjectives modify nouns through description, but articles are used instead to point out or refer to nouns. There are two different types of articles that we use in writing and conversation to point out or refer to a noun or group of nouns: definite and indefinite articles.
Definite articles
The definite article (the) is used before a noun to indicate that the identity of the noun is known to the reader
Indefinite articles
We use the indefinite article with singular nouns when the listener/reader does not know exactly which one we are referring to
Zero article
The term zero article refers to noun phrases that contain no articles, either definite or indefinite.
Possessive article
The basic possessive determiners in Modern English are my, your, his, her, its, our, their and whose (as in Whose coat is this? and the man whose car was stolen). As noted above, they indicate definiteness, like the definite article the.
Demonstrative
Article Talk. Demonstratives (abbreviated DEM) are words, such as this and that, used to indicate which entities are being referred to and to distinguish those entities from others. They are typically deictic, their meaning depending on a particular frame of reference, and cannot be understood without context.
