Adjectives Flashcards
Gradable
Most adjectives are gradable. This means we can have different levels of that quality. For example, you can be a bit cold, very cold or extremely cold.
Extreme
Extreme adjectives are words that give extra emphasis to the subject they describe: For example, “funny” is a normal adjective expressing that something makes us laugh, but “hilarious” is an extreme adjective which shows that something makes us laugh a lot. In other words, “hilarious” means “very funny”.
Comparative
Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences between the two objects they modify (larger, smaller, faster, higher). They are used in sentences where two nouns are compared
Superlative
It’s an adjective that takes a comparison to the highest degree. … While a comparative adjective describes the difference between two items, a superlative adjective compares three or more nouns. For example: My mother’s cooking is the best in the family.
Compound
A compound adjective is a single adjective made up of more than one word (e.g., two-seater aircraft, free-range eggs). The words in a compound adjective can stand alone and have a different meaning to the compound adjective and are often linked together with a hyphen (or hyphens) to show they are part of the same adjective.
