Possessive reported speech Flashcards
Direct Speech
Direct speech is a report of the exact words used by a speaker or writer. Contrast with indirect speech. Direct speech is usually placed inside quotation marks and accompanied by a reporting verb, signal phrase, or quotative frame. E.g. “I love you”, said Thomas.
Indirect Speech
Indirect speech is a report on what someone else said or wrote without using that person’s exact words (which is called direct speech). It’s also called indirect discourse or reported speech. E.g. Thomas said that he loved her.
Indirect Question
An indirect question is a question embedded inside a statement (i.e., a declarative sentence) or another question (i.e., an interrogative sentence). Of note, a declarative sentence with an embedded indirect question ends with a period ( ) / full stop ( ) not a question mark.
E.g. Do you like cheese? (Direct Question)
She asked if I liked cheese. (Indirect Question
Reporting Verb
A reporting verb is a verb (such as say, tell, believe, reply, respond, or ask) used to indicate that discourse is being quoted or paraphrased. It’s also called a communication verb.
E.g. says, states, indicates, comments, notes, observes, believes.
