What is premedication?
Drugs given prior to anaesthesia which contribute to the perianaesthetic process.
Why do we give premedication?
To relieve anxiety, to contribute to analgesia, to counter act unwanted side effects, to smooth induction and recovery, to reduce anaesthetic dose.
Define Tranquilizer
Drugs used to reduce anxiety, but no drowsiness
Define Sedative
Drugs used to reduce anxiety and cause drowsiness
Define Hyponotics
Sleep inducing drugs used to induce anaesthesia
What are the 4 main classes of premedication given? Can you give an example of each?
Phenothiazines (e.g. ACP), Butyrophenones (e.g. Azaperone), Benzodiazapenes (e.g. Diazapam), Alpha-2 agonists (e.g. Xylazine, Detomidine)
