What is the target population for prelinguistic milieu teaching/responsivity training?
–12-54 months functioning at 9-16 mo. Level.
–have 1 intentional comment, 1 protodeclarative
- -no more than 5 referential words
- -if 1 act per minute, not good candidate
–down syndrome, fetal alcohol delay
–can initiate joint attention, request, consonants
What theoretical backgrounds are involved in prelinguistic milieu teaching?
Social interaction, behavioral, developmental
What is the target of prelinguistic milieu teaching?
Expand child’s ability to request or comment spontaneously (increase frequency and complexity of their language)
What type of prompts are used in prelinguistic milieu teaching?
time delay, linguistic prompts, nonlinguistic promps
Define time delay
pause to attempt to get child to produce communication
Define linguistic prompts
Help child produce response (may not give hints about response needed) ex: what do you want?
If incorrect give answer
Define nonlinguistic prompts
Gestures, show child what you expect them to do
How can you use prelinguistic milieu teaching to increase joint attention?
give child object if look at adult. If do not, verbally prompt. Then nonlinguistically prompt by moving object to adults face, adults face where child can see, label object and provide. If does not do it, still provide after this.
What are intermediate goals that may be targeted with prelinguistic milieu teaching?
Establish routines to serve as a context for communication acts,
increase frequency of nonlinguistic vocalizations,
increase frequency and spontaneity of coordinated eyegaze
increase frequency and spontaneity of coordinated eye gaze, increase frequency, spontaneity, and range of gestures.
combine components (eye contact, vocalization, gesture)
