Focused stimulation Flashcards
What is the target population for focused stimulation?
Late talking Toddlers, SLI, intellectual disability, toddlers in early elementary (increase vocab and grammar)
What are the prerequisites for focused stimulation?
joint attention, sustained attention, social engagement, intentional communication stage
What are the main components of focused stimulation?
-Repetition (auditory bombardment)
-may or may not try to elicit spontaneous productions (usually not)
-may or may not contain recasting
Need: clinician/parent, child, stimuli related to target word
What is statistical learning theory and how does it relate to focused stimulation?
Learning language involves picking up on patterns, focused stimlation helps manipulate those patterns by increasing the frequency, thereby increasing the saliency
What is social learning theory?
Based on Bandura’s theory. Learning through modeling/imitation. Need to be able to attend to model.
What does the social constructionist theory involve?
Scaffolding to appropriate complexity level
What is the transactional model of language development?
Lang. Development a result of reciprocal interactions. If there are not reciprocal interactions, get into a negative feedback spiral
How many repetitions are typically used for vocabulary in focused stim?
5-10 exposures per target per session
How could you use focused stimulation to address form?
ex: Grammatical morphemes, phonology–words beginning with target sound
How could you use focused stimulation to address content?
ex: increase vocab. Use words with sounds in child’s phonetic inventory
How could you use focused stimulation to address use?
teaching requests, greetings
