Definition ABC
Affective attitude
•Behaviour= discrimination, Cognition/ beliefs= stereotyping
Modern/ Aversive Racism
• (know racism is bad but don’t realize they are racist, comes out in certain circumstance)
Minimal group Paradigm
Ex. Asking class which pictures they prefer. Makes them feel as a sense of in group. Creating groups upon these minimal differences. It was more important that their in group was better than the outgroup, even if that meant that they lost money
Sources of Prejudice
Social learning: acquiring neg attitudes through learning and socialization
Realistic Conflict: Intergroup competition. Ex. Cave experiment with young boys.
Social Identity: Sorting people based upon characteristics they have in common- Minimal Group Paradigm
Social Cognition: The way our minds operate. Schemas, confirmation bias and self-fulfilling prophecies. Stereotypes are easier to follow than getting to know someone.
Subtle Discrimination
- Workplace discrimination
- Sexist depicts- social norms/ media images
- Tokenism: Ex. Black actors but not as leads
Faceism
- Womens bodies shown in media images
- Only mens faces shown in media images
- Studies show that pictures of face rated more intelligent and ambitious
Impact of Sterotypes (Sterotype threat)
- People are aware of the sterotypes about their group
- If you’re aware of the stereotype before a stressful situation- you will worry about it and that will interfere
Changing sterotypes- contact hypothesis
- Robbers Cave studies
- Creating the discrimination of not liking each other
- Equal status- between members of the same group, common goal
