prejudice and SIT, RCT Flashcards
what is the cognitive element in prejudice
the beliefs held about a group, in the form of stereotypes, common but over simple views of what a particular group of people are like
what is the affective element in prejudice
feelings experienced in response to the group, if we are prejudiced against a group of people, seeing them may make us feel hate, anger fear when we see a member of that group
what is the behavioural element in prejudice
our actions towards the object of the prejudice, discrimination (behaving differently towards someone based on our pre judged views of them)
can range from avoidance to mass extermination
who came up with SIT and when
Tajfel 1970
what is the theory of social identity
the simple act of being grouped inevitably leads to the prejudice against one another
what does social identity theory argue about people
that we have several selves and the selves link to group membership
what does Tajfel say your self esteem depends on
how you feel about yourself
how you feel about the groups you are a member of
how can you boost your self esteem based on SIT
improve the status of your group
what are the three stages of SIT
social categorisation
social identification
social comparison
what is social categorisation
seeing yourself as part of a group
what is social identification
the process of moving from categorising to identifying with the group more overtly
likely to take on norms and attitudes
what is social comparison
compare the in group with the out group
self concept becomes absorbed by the group
consider their group as better
promote your in group = enhanced self esteem
