What is Pregnancy Induced Hypertension also called?
Gestational Hypertension and Toxemia
What is PIH (Gestational hypertension)?
hypertension in a pregnant woman after 20 weeks gestation without the presence of protein in the urine or other signs of pre-eclampsia
When does Gestational Hypertension happen?
anytime after the 20th week of gestation up to the 2nd and 3rd week of postpartum
What does Gestational hypertension refer to?
severe/fatal elevation of BP during pregnancy
What is vasospasm?
decrease blood flow to the different organs in the body
Why was Pregnancy Induced Hypertension called Toxemia?
it was seen as a toxin produced by woman due to foreign protein of the growing protein
What are the risk factors of PIH?
low socioeconomic status and lack of prenatal care
poor nutrition
multiple pregnancy
What are the screenings/test for PIH?
Roll over test
24 hour uring collection
urine protein
What is the roll over test?
Assess probability of developing toxemia between the 28th and 32nd week of pregnancy
What is the 1st step of the roll over test?
Patient lies in lateral recumbent position for 15 min until BP stabilizes
What is the 2nd step of the roll over test?
patient rolls over to supine position
What is the 3rd step of the roll over test?
BP is taken 1 and 5 mins after rolling over
What is the interpretation of the roll over test?
if diastolic pressure increases 20mmHg or more patient is prone to toxemia
What are the classic signs of PIH
Hypertension
Proteinuria
Edema
