Pregnancy and Human Development Flashcards
What does capacitation do for sperm?
Enhances motility and makes their membrane more fragile (for acrosomal rxn)
What triggers the acrosomal reaction?
Binding of sperm to zona pellucida, and an increase of calcium in the sperm
HCG
Present during pregnancy, acts to keep corpus luteum active (secreted hormones)
hPL
Stimulates breast development, fetal bone growth and glucose availability (decreased insulin sensitivity)
What does the ectoderm give rise to?
Nervous system and epidermis of skin
What does the endoderm give rise to?
Epithelial linings of many systems
What is organogenesis?
Formation of body organ systems in a growing fetus
Parturition
Giving birth
What initiates parturition?
Release of fetal cortisol
What allows for labour to occur?
Decrease in progesterone (increase in estrogen) and affinity for oxytocin receptors in the myometrium
Prolactin
Stimulates milk production
Oxytocin (in regards to lactation)
Contracts alveoli to release milk (let-down reflex)
