Predicting Hazards [U1] Flashcards
Why is it important to predict hazards?
It allows people to evacuate in time before a hazard hits.
Prediction allows for warnings to be sent out in time.
Allows people to prepare for a hazard.
What is prediction, forecast and warnings?
Prediction - Provides precise statement on the time, place and size of a future hazard
Forecast - General statements about the hazard
Warnings - Information about the upcoming hazard is provided to people. Dependant on technology access.
What is the seismic gap theory?
All parts of a plate boundary will move eventually, so a place that didn’t have seismic activity for a long time is assumed to have an imminent hazard incoming.
What are some equipment used to predict hazards?
Seismometers, chemical sensor for sulphur, GPS to monitor slope.
