Plate Mechanism [U1] Flashcards
Define the term “Lithosphere”.
The solid part of the Earth. Consists of the Crust and the most cool, soldified mantle.
Define the term “Asthenosphere”.
The viscous part of Earth (semi molten) below the Lithosphere.
This is about Internal Heating. Define the term “Radiogenic heat”.
Heat released during radioactive decay of elements in the crust and mantle.
This is about Internal Heating. Define the term “Primodial heat”.
Heat released as the Earth is still cooling from its original formation.
This is about Internal Heating. Solids and Liquids transfer heat by different processes. Which material uses which process?
Solid parts conduct heat. Liquid parts convect heat.
Define the term “Slab Pull”.
As a plate subducts under another, gravity will start pulling down the plate with more force due to the weight, dragging the entire plate after.
Define the term “Magma plume”.
An area of unusually high heat flow. Tectonic plates can move over it while the plume stays in place, creating chain of islands.
