what is mob football? What are the characteristics?
Played on shrove tuesday and ash wednesday(limited free time), played within 3miles, With pigs bladder(local, cheap), male dominated and highly violent, one rule no murder, unlimited number of players
What is real tennis? what are the characteristics?
pre-industrial version of tennis, royal exclusive upper class activity, male dominated, complex rules, lacked violence, played on a regular basis, expensive purpose built facilities, non local in nature(upper classes ability to travel freely)
Why did the authorities want to ban mob football?
violent and unruly in nature, injuries/damage to property, involved gambling(2 teams chosen from birth), alcohol consumption/drunken behaviour
What is pedestrianism/foot racing, what are some characteristics?
form of competitive running/walking, upper class were patrons to the lower class, upper class would bet, success meant increased social class,
were early athletic competitions a social event?
Early athletics took the form of ‘festival occasion’ with individuals organising rural community festivals containing athletic events. e.g ‘Much wenlock olympic games’
what were the wenlock olympian games and the aims?
first version of olympic games, traditional sports and cricket football cycling (pennyfarthing), aims: promote moral physical intellectual improvements to lower classes. form olympian class, wenlock olympian class targeted ppl in the town
