Post 1948, Czechoslovakia was loyal to Moscow, new Czechos. leader Alexander Dubcek advocated a reform of the socialist system: socialism w/ a human face, implemented liberalizing policies and April 1968 “Action program”

A

Brezhnev and Warsaw leaders sent tanks into Czechos. Aug 20, 1968 and took control of Prague, Dubcek ordered army to avoid confrontation, Dubcek forced to repeal reforms.

A

US and NATO took no action, UN tried to condemn it but USSR vetoed condemnation, discontent grew in Soviet sphere because invading soldiers had been lied to- told Czechos. needed help, new Czechos. leader=Gustav Husak conformed to Soviets

A

Brezhnev’s response to Prague Spring, essentially stating that socialist policies within a nation must conform to Soviet socialist policies to prevent a breakdown of the system. “Brezhnev Doctrine”
