Practice Quiz-Lecture 1 Flashcards
Rutgers School of Public Health wants to study the average age at menopause of Filipino American women who were age 65 years or above as of January 2020. Define the population and the sample.
Population: All Filipino women living in America and are of age 65 years or above as of January 2020. Sample: A subset of these women.
Oncologists want to study whether treatment with panitumumab improves survival in metastatic colon cancer patients. They divided the patient population into those with a KRAS mutation and those without a mutation. They invited some patients in each group to participate in the study. Patients invited in each group were randomly assigned to receive panitumumab or standard treatment. Oncologists then observed these patients for 3 years for survival, and then compared survival of patients receiving panitumumab and standard treatment. What type of study design is this?
Experimental study with stratified random sampling and a randomized trial in each stratum
In a recent study of heart disease, cardiologists measured height (in meters) and weight (in kilograms) of patients, and calculated body mass index (BMI) as height divided by the square of weight i.e., BMI = (height) / (weight * weight). They then created BMI class as underweight (if BMI < 18.5), normal (if BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9), overweight (if BMI is between 25 and 29.9), and obese (if BMI is 30 and above). What kinds of variables are: height, weight, and BMI class?
Height = continuous, weight = continuous, BMI class = categorical or ordinal
