Practical Lab #1 Chemistry of Biology Flashcards
1
Q
pH Scale
A
Closer to 1=stronger acidity
Closer to 14= stronger base
7=Neutral
2
Q
Acids have an increase in……
A
H+ ions
3
Q
Bases have an increase in……
A
OH- ions
4
Q
Whats is a Buffer?
A
A solution that resists changes in pH when acid or alkali is added to it.
5
Q
What indicators are used to determine pH range?
A
Bromothymol Blue (BTB) and Phenol Red (PR)
6
Q
Positive BTB
A
Color changes from blue to yellow
7
Q
Positive PR
A
Color changes from red to yellow
8
Q
How are various antacids tested for their buffering capacities?
A
- Measure out 10ml of de-ionized water into two different beakers marked BTB and PR
- Add 3 drops of BTB to one beaker and 3 drops of PR to the other
- Add 3-5 drops of the first solution into both beakers and record any color change. No color change= Base Color Change= Acid
- Test the pH scale with pH testing strips
