Practical 3 - station 4 - cortex Flashcards
What are lobes subdivided into?
Fissures, gyri, sulci
What are fissures?
Deep grooves
What are gyri?
Elevated folds - ridges
What are sulci?
Shallow grooves between folds (gyri)
What is the function of fissures, gyri and sulci?
To increase the surface area
In general what is each lobe divided into?
3 gyri and 2 sulci
Function of the longitudinal fissure
2 cerebral hemispheres
Function of the lateral fissure
frontal + parietal lobe from temporal lobe
Function of the transverse fissure
cerebellum from cerebrum
What does the cerebral cortex allow?
us to be aware of ourselves and our sensations, to communicate, remember, understand and initiate voluntary movments
What matter is the cerebral cortex made up of?
Gray matter only
What is the significance of contralaterality?
each hemisphere is concerened with sensory and motor functions of the opposite side of the body
What does lateralization meant?
2 hemispheres aren’t entirely symmetrical and equal in function
Which cortices receive or provide info from or to the body?
Somatosensory - sensory info from body
Motor - motor info to body
What does the amount of cortex devoted to an area depend on?
How many receptors there are in the body region it is receiving or sending info to/from
