PPV and Cobra Flashcards
What does PPV stand for?
Postitive pressure ventilation
What are the 3 types of ventilation
Self
Automatic
Tactical (Natural or forced)
What is forced ventilation?
Vertical and horizontal ventilation when mechanical means are used to accelerate the effects of natural ventilation in removing the hot gases and smoke
What are the advantages of PPV?
Replenishes oxygen and reduces carbon monoxide levels
Controls temperature and humidity
Removes moisture, dust and other airborne contaminants
Improves visibility and aides navigation
Restricts fire and smoke damage to property
What are the disadvantages of PPV?
Locally intensity fire
Increase potential for backdraught
If exhaust is made incorrectly and force hear and smoke in to unaffected areas of premise
What are the phases of ventilation?
Phase 1 post fire - fire completely extinguished
Phase 2 - after control of fire but before extinction
Phase 3 - before control of fire
What is the primary function of cobra?
Cool fire gases and suppress fire from outside compartment without the need to enter
Tell me about the cobra system
Appliance mounted to high pressure hose reel water jet system
Entrains abrasive into the water jet
Pierces through all common building materials
Delivers fine atomised mist into compartment
Cools gases and suppresses fire without entering
What is the working pressure of Cobra?
300 Bar at 400mph
How much water does cobra use?
60L per minute
What is the droplet size when using cobra?
0.1mm
What type of abrasive is used in a cobra?
Iron based
What are the advantages of using cobra?
Improved firefighter safety Compatible with conventional firefighting techniques Speed of operation Environment benefits Economic benefits
What should be considered when cutting and piercing using cobra?
Injury to person behind surface
Damage caused beyond cutting surface
Displacement beyond initial cutting surface
Cause fire development due to uncontrolled ventilation
How long does a full abrasive vessel last?
4.5 minutes
How much abrasive can an abrasive vessel contain?
20kg
How much pressure is lost per 80m of cobra hose?
40 Bar
