Heat Related Conditions Flashcards
What factors increase heat related conditions?
Metabolic rate Environment Clothing Fitness Race Sex Age
Give 3 causes of heat related conditions
Humidity Ambient temperature Length of exposure Convection Radiation Full fire kit BA
What are the effects of raised body temperature?
Increased blood flow
Increases sweat production
Sweating leads to dehydration
Give 3 psychological impacts of heat related conditions?
Anxiety
Decreased cognitive skills
Mental confusion
Over estimate personal capabilities
Give 3 physiological impacts of hot conditions?
Work rate increases
Performance drops
Fatigue
Name 6 heat related conditions
Heat exhaustion Heat faint Hear oedema Heat rash Heat cramp Heat stroke
What is heat exhaustion?
Mild response to exposure of hot environments
What are the symptoms of hear exhaustion?
Feeling unwell Tiredness/irritability Nausea Vomiting Cramps in legs, arms and abdomen Rapid, weakening pulse and breathing Extreme thirst and mouth dryness Poor control over movement
What is heat faint?
Reduction in blood flow to brain due to exposure to hot environment
What are the symptoms of hear faint?
Headache Dizziness Weakness Tunnel vision/blurring of vision Place, sweaty skin Weak, slow pulse Loss of consciousness
What is heat stroke?
Failure of the brains ‘thermosat’ resulting in body temperature of 40C+ and disturbed mental function
What are the symptoms of heat stroke?
Headache Dizziness Confusion and restlessness Hot, dry skin Muscle weakness/cramps Unconsciousness Convulsions
How should you treat a heat related condition?
Move to a cool, shaded environment Cool - cold compress, fan etc Remove heavy clothing Lie down Elevate feet
However be aware of hypothermia!
If deployed in BA in ambient conditions how long should the wearer rest after withdrawing? And how much water is to be consumed?
30 minutes
500ml water
If deployed in BA in hot and humid conditions how long should the wearer rest after withdrawing? And how much water is to be consumed?
60 minutes
1000ml
