Day 2 Flashcards
Duties of BA wearer Emergency distress to wearer Confined space self rescue Smoke escape hoods
What are the duties of a BA wearer?
Don BA in safe air and carry out pre entry checks
Receive and confirm brief
Carry out buddy checks
Work out turn around pressure
Hand BA tally to ECO before entering risk area
Carry out BA shuffle and search techniques
Regular verbal and physical contact with BA team members
Regular gauge checks
Report to ECO and collect tally on exit
Provide debrief
How do you work out turnaround pressure?
Initial pressure - rounded down
Plus 70
Divided by 2
Then rounded up to nearest 10
What should a BA team check before entering a risk area?
Buddy check TIC Radio comms Torches Branch has water
What constitutes an initial entry?
BA team temporarily withdraws Face masks not removed Cylinders not closed Do not collect tally from ECO Immediately revisit risk area No need for ECO to update board
What constitutes a new entry?
Team withdraws from risk area
Closes down sets
Accepts tallies
Services sets, changes cylinder and completes general check
New brief to carry out another entry into risk area
Fresh records required on ECO board
What constitutes a re-entry?
BA team leaves risk area Takes off mask and closes down cylinder Receives tallies from ECO BUT do not change cylinder Re-entry is for a clearly defined task Must have a minimum of 150 Bar Cylinder contents must be sufficient for task No doubt about fitness if BA wearer
What considerations should ECO take when a BA team completes a re-entry?
Fresh details required
In remarks column write ‘RE-ENTRY’
Time if whistle worked out for 150 Bar
Write 150 on cylinder pressure on tally
When a BA wearer is thought to be in distress what should the ECO do?
Contact all BA teams to ascertain their welfare Confirm if accidental activation or not Confirm with distressed team Location, injury, cylinder contents Inform IC Initiate BA Emergency message if IC is not available Commit BA emergency team Request replacement BA emergency team
What should a distressed BA team do?
Inform ECO of; Reason for distress Cylinder contents Location and intentions Risk asses whether to relocate
Adopt entrapped procedure to preserve air
Activate ADSU
If you become entrapped as a BA wearer what should you do?
Remain calm Don't purge Inform ECO and pass on relevant info Sit down Limit talking Operate ADSU
What will control do if a BA emergency is declared at a incident?
Send an extra appliance
Two FDS officers
One ambulance
Inform divisional office and duty principal officer
What is the definition of a distress to wearer incident?
All incidents involving a malfunction of a BA set including the DDU while excluding ancillary items while in training or operational use
When is a BA malfunction reportable?
Whilst BA is in use in a contaminated areas be it operational or in training
While BA set is still being worn after leaving contaminated atmosphere
Discovered during an immediate check prior to operations
During use where the wearer doesn’t not have ability to operate controls or remove their mask and there is actual or potential deprivation of air
When is a BA malfunction not reportable?
Discovered during routine checking of equipment before use
BA set failure due to operator error
Failure when wearing in cosmetic smoke
Failure of ancillary equipment
When impounding a set what happens?
Set is impounded - including tally, mask, cylinder and log book
Control are informed
Briefs are submitted from those involved
Set removed to SHQ
What is the process when going through a confined space?
Asses size of hole Check other side with feet Check gauge from pressure Remove set and package Remove helmet and pass through hole Feet first face down wiggle through Carefully pull through set Replace helmet Unpackage set and replace on self Check gauge and continue
What should you try if you can’t get through a confined space?
Empty fire pockets
Remove tunic
Shallow breaths
Inch through as you exhale
Who would you use a smoke hood on?
Members of the public
What are the advantages of a smoke hood?
Lightweight Attaches to BA set Readily deployable No testing required Casualty can move independent of rescuer Unimpaired vision Minimal training implications Limited restriction to BA wearer
What are the limitations of a smoke hood?
Will not support life in oxygen deficient atmosphere
Single use
8 years shelf life
Limited wear time of 15 minutes
What should be considered when deciding whether to use a smoke hood?
Would it be safer and more effective to carry out rescue to clean air without fitting a smoke hood
Is staying put best course of action
Is 15minute working duration long enough to complete safe rescue
Are there alternative routes that avoid exposing the casualty to fire/smoke
