define discourse
studies the meaning of sentences above and apart from the literal words that comprise the sentence
semantics deals with how each word makes meaning, discourse concentrates on the act of speech
discourse analysis (DA)
studies connected text, or units of language above the level of the sentence
critical discourse analysis (CDA)
studies the connection of features of discourse to the larger sociopolitical context in which it occurs
often focuses on ‘institutional discourse’ which is the language of the media, courtrooms, and politics
how language creates and maintains power
speech act theory:
locutionary act
the literal meaning of an utterance

illocutionary act
the intended meaning of an utterance in context

the effect of the utterance on the listener
