What is the mental health component of the health triangle?

A

deals with how we think, feel, and cope with daily life

  • learning – development of skills, behaviours, and knowledge
  • stress – body’s reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response (distress – negative reaction to stress)
  • mental illnesses – refer to mental health problems that are diagnosed and treated by mental health professionals and includes depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, eating disorders, schizophrenia, and personality disorders

What is primary health care?

A

first contact with health care system

  • may involve: diagnosis, treatment, health promotion, disease prevention
  • primary care providers (ie. family physicians, community pharmacists) deal with broad range of physical, psychological, and social problems

What is secondary health care?

A

mainly involves specialist care (ie. rheumatologist, cardiologist, oncologist)

  • may involve: diagnosis, treatment
  • need referral from primary care provider for care

What is tertiary health care (specialized consultative health care)?

A

involves advanced medical investigation and treatment that usually, but not always, involves inpatient care (ie. hospital admission)

  • need referral from primary or secondary health care
  • pediatric rheumatology program at BC Children’s Hospital
  • cancer treatment at BC Cancer Agency
  • coronary artery bypass surgery at St. Paul’s Hospital
