PPE Flashcards
what is PPE
any item intended for wearing or carrying by the worker with the aim of protecting him from one or more hazards that pose a risk of injury or jeopardize health at work. In addition to ant item or accessory worn for the same purpose
requirements for PPE
according to regulations:
- protect from the risk without posing a greater risk
- suitable for the existing workplace conditions
- allow for the worker’s ergonomic and health requiremente
- can be adapted to the user’s personl preference
when there are several risks requiring contemporary use of mroe than one item,, they must be compatbile to maintain their effectiveness in terms of protection against risk/s
main factors influencing selection of PPE
-type of exposure (splash/spray vs touch and the hazard group of the infectious agent)
- durability
-appropriatness for task
- fit (ergonomics)
potential injuries to eyes and face from:
liquid chemicals (acids or caustic liquids), gases/vapours, areosols (chemical or biologcial), flying particles
criteria for eye and face protection
have adequete protection, dura ble, can be cleaned and sterilized, comfortable when worn and fith sungly without interfering in movement or vision
selection of appropriate hand protection
- type of hand protection necessary
- type of work activity (dexterity, duration, frequency, degree of exposure, physical stress)
- anticipation of specific hazard (RA)
3 factors that differentiate one type of glove from another
- degredation : loss of physical qualities
- permeation:
Breakthrough Time BTT: the time it takes for a chemical to pass through the glove
and
Permeation Rate PR: the rate at which the chemical transmits through the glove after breakthrough
4 types of respiratory protection
tight fitting : half masks
loose fitting: helmets and hoods
air purifying : removes contaminants
atmosphere supplying: clean breathable air from uncontaminated source
