chemical safety Flashcards
types of injuries caused by chemicals
Immediate, delayed and cumulative
route of exposure to chemicals
ingestion- eating or swallowing
across placenta
inhalation
absorption from skin or eyes
4 types of effects chemicals could have
allergenic - allergic or hypersenstivie reactions
carcinogenic - cause or increase risk of cancer
mutagenic- cause mutation of germ cells leading to genetically induced malformations
teratogenic- affects foetus
risk control strategies for chemical safety
- replace with non hazardous or one of lower hazard
- purchase store and use the smallest amount possible
- use pure reagents as the impuritires may be toxic
- select chemicals more easily contained
- replace syoppers immediately after use
- clearly label all reagents
chemical containers must be labelled with
content
hazard warning
safety precautions
date received or prepared
date opened or used
expirey date
manufacturer
mention some hazards of chemicals (properties in a way)
toxic, highly toxic, flammable, highly flammable, extremely flammable, oxidising, irritant, corrosive, harmful, explosive
regulation and system used in chemical safetyt symbols for EU
regulation: CLP clasification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures
system: GHS globally harmonized system of classification and labelling of chemicals
what are hazard statements and precautionary statemenst
the hazard statement describes the nature of the hazard of the chemical in the substance or mixture H301- toxic if swallowed
the precautionary statemtne describes recomended measures to minimize or prevent adverse effects resulting from exposure to the hazardous material.
P281- use PPE as required
chemical hazard label
developed for fire protection and emergency personell
blue- health hazard
red- fire hazard
yellow- reactivity
white-speciffic hazard
safety data sheet
provides all the info about the chemicals: any harms/hazards (PPE which is used and any first aid), how to dispose of it, how to handle it and any special precautions
every user must have the original copy
what are the Ocupational Exposure Limits OELs????
they are set limits of the concentration of hazardous compounds that may be in the air, to protect against health effects only. they are important tools for risk assesments and management.
They apply for marketed products and waste and by products
storage of chemicals`
away from fire exits/exits, electricity and heat
-area must be adequetly ventilated
- limited access
-grouped by chemical type.
