What is biological race?
category of people who share inherited physical characteristics that distinguish them from others
What is social race?
people who are perceived to belong to the same broad category loosely based on a number of visible shared physical characteristics
What is the One Drop Rule?
small amount of white or black blood defines you
What is an ethnic group?
category of people defined on basis of cultural characteristics/common cultural heritage
What is a minority group?
subordinate group that occupies an inferior position of prestige, wealth, and power (not necessarily fewer in number, but less powerful)
What is prejudice?
rigidly held (usually negative) attitudes, beliefs, and feelings towards members of another group or people occupying a social status because they occupy that status
What is racism?
ideology that people use to justify their prejudice/discrimination towards another race based on belief that there is an inherent superiority of one racial group and an inferiority of another
What is discrimination?
unfavorable treatment of people, denying them opportunities or rights because of their group membership or for other arbitrary reasons
What is attitudinal discrimination?
stems from prejudicial attitudes, behaviors taken with the intent to discriminate (“deliberate hate”)
What is institutional discrimination?
organizational practices and societal trends that exclude minorities from economic opportunity, power, and prestige (ex. getting a loan based on race) –> more common than attitudinal
What are the patterns of treatment of minorities?
- Genocide
- Expulsion and Exclusion
- Oppression
- Segregation
- Assimilation
What is genocide?
systematic killing of people within one category, often with the intent of eliminating the entire category of people
What is direct expulsion?
the forcible ejection of a minority from the area (ex. Trail of Tears)
What is indirect expulsion?
use of harassment, discrimination, and persecution to encourage minorities to leave
What is exclusion?
policies that refuse admission or citizenships to certain categories of people
