Power Augmentaion Flashcards
Turbo charger
Pre compresses air before the inlet manifold
Uses exhaust gas energy to power turbine which drives the compressor
Improves thermal efficiency and volumetric efficiency
Altitude boosted systems
Designed to maintain MSL pressure
Ground boosted systems
Raises MAP above MSL pressure
Waste gate
Prevents MAP r/y and regulates the exhaust gas going through the turbine
Control of this gives control of engine boost
Critical alt - turbochargers
Altitude at which the waste gate is fully closed and turbocharger RPM is at a max
Any increase in alt will lead to reduced turbo RPM
BHP rapidly decreases when climbing above this alt
Over boost relief valve
Prevents boost reaching a level that would cause structural damage
Supercharger
Same impeller design
Drives compressor from the crankshaft and BHP from the engine
Can be used to compress air and fuel
Power output increases as the exhaust back pressure reduces
Intercooler
Used to cool the pressurised inlet air
Reduces the chances of detonation
Mainly used in turbo due to heat transfer but may be used in super to raise the temp
Secondary effect - charge density is increased
Changing engine power - pilot actions
Increase - richer mixture (reduces temp), increase RPM (reduces load), increase MAP
Decrease - decrease MAP, RPM and adjust mixture
