What is power?
The ability to influence the behaviour of others and resist unwanted influence in return.

What are the three types of organizational power?
1) Legitimate power
2) Reward power
3) Coercive power
What is legitimate power?
Derived from a position of authority inside the organization.
What is reward power?
Exists when someone has control over the resources or rewards another person wants.
What is coercive power?
Exists when a person has control over punishments in an organization.
What are two types of personal power?
1) Expert (from one’s knowledge)
2) Referent (when others desire to be identified with a person)
What are examples of influence tactics?
Assertiveness Ingratiation Rationality Exchange Upward appeal Coalition formation
What is resistance?
People oppose the behaviour desired by the influencer.
What is compliance?
Motivated by external sources to implement request.
What is commitment?
Identify with and highly motivated to implement request.
How do employees respond to power?
Coercive power - Resistance
Reward power -Compliance
Legitimate power-Compliance
Expert power - Commitment
Referent power -Commitment
Why do people want power?
They need to have influence over others.
What are institutional managers?
Use their powers for the good of the organization.
