What is motivation?
Exerting a particular effort level (intensity) for a certain amount of time (persistence), toward a particular goal (direction)
Extrinsic Motivation
Desire to put forth work effort due to some contingency that depends on task performance.
Intrinsic Motivation
Desire to put forth work effort due to the sense that task performance serves as its own reward.
What represent’s an employee’s total motivation level?
Extrinsic + Intrinsic Motivation
What are some examples of extrinsic outcomes?
Salary, bonuses, promotions, praise, disciplinary actions, demotions
What are some examples of intrinsic outcomes?
Accomplishment, employment, skill development, knowledge, lack of boredom
What are Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?
1) Physiological Needs
2) Safety Needs
3) Social Needs (acceptance)
4) Esteem Needs (need to achieve and be recognized)
5) Self-actualization needs (to perform at max level of creativity)

What are motivators (Herzberg)?
Intrinsic factors in the job that lead to satisfaction, such as achievement and the work itself.
What are hygiene factors (Herzberg)?
Extrinsic factors surrounding the job that lead to dissatisfaction, such as company policies and pay.
What is job enrichment (Herzberg)?
Designing or redesigning jobs by incorporating motivational factors into them.
