What is Organizational Culture?
A cognitive framework consisting of assumptions and values shared by organization members.
What is the dominant culture?
The distinctive, overarching “personality” of the organization, which reflects its core values.
What are subcultures?
Cultures existing within parts of organizations rather than entirely through them.
What are the three basic functions of org culture?
1) Provides a sense of identity for members
2) Enhances commitment to the organization’s mission
3) Clarifies and reinforces standards of behaviour.
What contributes to the creation of an org’s culture?
1) Company founders
2) Interaction with others in organization
3) Experience with the environment
What is organizational socialization?
The process by which individuals learn the values, expected behaviours, and social knowledge necessary to assume their roles in the organization
What are some problems with strong cultures?
Culture content might be misaligned with the organization’s environment.
Strong cultures may focus on mental models that could be limiting
Strong cultures suppress dissenting values from subcultures.
