Define legitimate power
Given to the manager by the org d/t his position in the hierarchy; comes from appointment to position
Define reward power
Based on ability to control and administer rewards for compliance w leader’s orders; POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
Define coercive power
Opposite of reward power; Founded on fear, but can be useful to serve as a push to obtain results
Define expert power
Derived from special skill, ability, knowledge; even from formal or informal education and experience
Define referent power
Based on appeal of person to another and connection with a powerful individual
Define self-power
Personal attributes that one possesses that makes them a good fit
Derived from one’s:
- maturity: views situations objectively
- credibility & reputation: no involvement in illegal entanglement
- experience
Define information power
Based on information manager possesses; you become credible if you have access to information
