Administration vs. Management?
Administration
- top level of org
- sets future direction of service; focuses on establishing objectives and integrating work units to achieve mission
Management:
- refers to middle and lower levels in hierarchy
- Direct and guide operations of the organization
Leaders vs. Managers
Leaders
- not part of formal org
- do not have delegated authority, but obtain power thru other means
- wider variety of roles
- more focused on group processes and empowering others
- direct WILLing followers only
- emphasize interpersonal relationships
Managers
- always assigned a position w/i an org
- legitimate source of power
- carry out specific functions
- focus on control, indiv decision making
- direct BOTH willing and unwilling
- manipulate resources to achieve organizational goals
Levels of Nurse Managers
- Upper Level: responsible for entire org
- Middle Level: integrate all of the units u have with same nature of services
- First level: unit based, responsible for very limited unit of the org
Basic skills required of nurse leader/manager
- Conceptual: come up w/ innovative ideas; create programs fr ur own experiences; how to improve smth
- Technical: theoretical; need the experience
- Human relations: interpersonal relationships are key
- Administrative / organizational: a lot of bigger scale decision making and problem solving
- Communication: both spoken or written; should be able to articulate what’s on mind
- Analytical: sense making to data provided
- Decision making: decisive and confident in decisions so subordinates will be the same
