what puts a client at risk for hypokalemia?
corticosteroids severe vomiting gastric suctioning excess insulin intestinal fluid loss
what are the signs and symptoms of hypokalemia?
GI: nausea, vomiting, constipation
Muscle: weakness, LEG CRAMPS
Heart: irregular, weak
what is the tx for hypokalemia?
sports drink to replace K+
excess of potassium
hyperkalemia ( > 5.5 mEq/L)
what puts a client at risk for hyperkalemia?
renal failure
excess intake of K
adrenal insufficiency
what are the signs and symptoms of hyperkalemia?
GI: nausea, vomiting, cramping, diarrhea
Neuro: parasthesia
Muscle: hyperactivity
what is the tx for hyperkalemia?
dialysis
insulin (promotes movement of K into cell)
dextrose (prevents hypoglycemia while giving insulin)
LASIX
what foods are high in potassium?
bananas
spinach
meat
potatoes
- is a major cation in the ICF
- vital for skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle activity
- must be ingested daily
