95 to 108 mEq/L

hypochloremia ( < 95 mEq/L)
what can lead to hypochloremia?
can result from other electrolyte imbalances
vomiting
diarrhea
body fluid loss
what are the signs and symptoms of hypochloremia?
Skin: tenting
Mental: confusion, apathy, seizures, stupor
GI: hyperactive bowel sounds
Muscle: wasting, atrophy
what is the tx for hypochloremia?
treat the underlying cause
increase salt
-excess of chloride
hyperchloremia ( > 108 mEq/L)
what can lead to hyperchloremia?
renal failure
diarrhea
what are the signs and symptoms of hyperchloremia?
*can be asymptomatic
Muscle: weakness
GI: intense thirst
Respiratory: Kussmauls’s respirations
what is the tx for hyperchloremia?
treat the underlying cause
dialysis
what foods are high in chloride?
bacon
ham
cheese
(same as sodium foods..)
- major anion of the ECF
- functions with sodium to regulate serum osmolality of ECF and blood volume
- combines with H to form gastric acids
