Posture Flashcards
How does physiological movement relate to planes and axis?
Physiological movement of the human body occurs within a plane and around an axis.
Which action moves around the sup/inf axis?
Rotation
Share movement occurs around the anterior/posterior axis?
Abduction/Adduction, as well as lateral flexion/sidebending
What movement is around the left/right axis?
Flexion/Extension
What factors determines posture?
The force of gravity on the body mass and the strength of the individual
What are the 5 postures?
Standing Seated Lateral Recumbent (Side-lying) Supine (Lying face up) Prone (Lying face up)
How do you evaluate posture in the frontal plane?
- Observe pt f/ Ant/pos
- Observe abduction and sidebending asymmetries
- Compare facial feature height, pecs, nipples
- Compare facial features bilaterally
- Compare patellas and arch of feet
- look for left/right features
How do we evaluate posture in the transverse plane?
- Observe from Anterior to posterior
- Look for rotational symmetry of trunk, neck, and limb
How do we evaluate standing posture in saggital plane?
- Observe from Side/Lateral
- Flexion/extension asymmetries
- Plumb line relationship
- Proportional curves of spine
What is a plumb line? What landmarks does is pass through?
A weight earring line we can use as a comparative when assessing posture
- External auditory meatus
- Humeral Head
- L3 Vertebral Body
- Anterior 1/3 of Sacrum
- Femoral head/greater trochanter
- Lateral malleolus
What is the ideal sleeping position?
- sidelying
- Firm surface
- Head of pillow
- Knees flexed
- Pillow between knees
What is Accommodation?
A self-reversing, non-persisting adaptation
What is characteristic of decompensation?
- Structural inability to resist gravitational forces
- Inability to compensate in an organized fashion
- Homeostatic mechanisms are overwhelmed
- Decompensation is PAIN PRODUCING
