Define postural hypotension

A

A fall in systolic blood pressure of at least 20 mmHg (at least 30 mmHg in patients with hypertension) and/or a fall in diastolic blood pressure of at least 10 mmHg within 3 minutes of standing.

A
  • Syncope when sitting or standing up which is improved when lying down
    • Visual changes
    • Weakness
    • Fatigue
    • May be increased ventilation and dyspnoea

A

• Increasing age
• Frailty
• Medications which alter sympathetic tone (tamsulosin)
• Dehydration
