What is dyslipidaemia
Dyslipidaemia is a broad term describing a number of conditions, including
hypercholesterolaemia, hyperlipidaemia and mixed dyslipidaemia, in which
disturbances in fat metabolism lead to changes in the concentrations of lipids in the blood.
What are primary and secondary causes of high cholesterol?
Primary: genetic mutations e.g. familial hypercholesterolaemia
Secondary: obesity, DM, hypothyroidism, cholestatic liver disease, drugs e.g. thiazide, atypical antipsychotics
What are Sx of hyperlipidaemia
May be
Xanthelasma
Corneal arcus
Xanthomata
Likely none, just presence of risk factors
What are risk factors for dyslipidaemia
FH, CVD, fatty diet, abdominal obesity, T2DM
What Ix in dyslipidaemia
Lipid profile (cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL)
TSH
Lipoprotein
What are DDx for dyslipidaemia
Obstructive liver disesae
hypothyroidism
nephrotic syndrome
What is Rx for dyslipidaemia?
Statins
