Phase 1: Taking in
he period after birth when the mother focuses on her own psychological needs. Typically this period lasts 24 hours. Reliving the birth experience makes the event real and helps the mother realize that the pregnancy is over and that the infant is born and is now a separate individual.
Intervention: Hand the baby to the mother.
Phase 2: Taking hold
taking hold, the mother begins to initiate action and becomes interested in caring for the infant. In doing so, she may become critical of her performance (Leifer p. 103 q.16)
Taking hold: the mother assumes responsibility for her own care and shifts her attention to the infant.(Perry 332 q.26)
Phase 3: Letting Go
Woman gives up fantasy image of baby and accepts real child. Occurs within few weeks of getting home Needs time to adjust to new experience
Letting go: Accepting the real infant and relinquishing the fantasy infant (Perry 332 q.26)
Phase 4: Bonding
Expressing maternal love & attachment toward a new baby. Develops gradually. Enface position: close eye contact with infant. Healthy bonding ‐kissing, touching, counting fingers & toes, cooing, etc.
