COCP may reduce breast milk production in lactating mothers
Why should the COCP not be given to mothers before 21 days after giving birth?
Due to the increased venous thromboembolism risk post-partum
What should be taken along with the COCP after 21 days of giving birth?
After day 21 additional contraception should be used for the first 7 days
When can an IUD be inserted post partum?
Within 48 hours of childbirth or after 4 weeks.
How effective if the Lactational amenorrhoea method (LAM)?
98% effective
What makes the Lactational amenorrhoea method effective?
The woman is fully breast-feeding (no supplementary feeds), Amenorrhoeic
< 6 months post-partum
What is the problem with getting pregnant again within 12 months of giving birth?
Increased risk of preterm birth, low birth weight and small for gestational age babies.
