When is the postnatal period?
First 6 weeks after baby is born
What are common problems encountered in the postnatal period?
- Problems with feeding
- Problems with bonding
- Social issues (partner, other children and financial issues)
Who does a woman see in the postnatal period?
- Midwife (at home for first 9/10 days)
- Health visitor
- GP (6 week postnatal check)
What are some complications associated with breast feeding?
- Mastitis
- Blocked milk ducts
- Difficulty feeding/baby latching
- Skin irritation “cracked nipples”
What are some key postnatal conditions?
- Post partum haemorrhage
- Venous thromboembolism
- Sepsis
- Psychiatric disorders
- Hypertensive disorders
What is primary postpartum haemorrhage?
Blood loss >500mls within first 24hrs of delivery
What is secondary postpartum haemorrhage?
Blood loss >500mls from 24hrs post partum to 6 weeks
What are the 4T’s of post partum haemorrhage?
- Tone
- Trauma
- Tissue
- Thrombin
Why are pregnant women more likely to develop thromboembolism?
Because pregnancy is a hyper-coagulable state
Signs a woman may have a thromboembolic disease?
Women with unilateral leg swelling and/or pain and woman complaining of SOB or chest pain
