postmodernism Flashcards
McLuhan - Postmodernism
The Global Village - New patterns of communication and social interactions, we have become interconnected on a global scale. This offers people choice, eg, new hybrid ethnic identities.
“Everyone lives in the utmost proximity created by our electronic involvement in one another’s lives.” Especially through the internet and TV brings info instantaneously from the four corners of the planet. - Globalisation
Strinati - Postmodernism
Erosion of identities - Media plays a significant role while people are constructing their identities because people are connected to devices and services on a daily basis.
The mass media used to reflect society directly, but claims that in a postmodern world it’s not so simple. Diversity offered by the media means that there are no traditional representations of social groups. Meaning an erosion of identity, the boundaries have been blurred between different groups of people (through all types of identity).
Baudrillard - Postmodernism
Media saturation has altered reality in a negative way - It has made it very difficult for people to distinguish what is reality and what is fiction. People are so engulfed by communications that it has led to the state of hyperreality where our physical reality is blended with our virtual one.
This work was done in the 80s/90s, he was ahead of his time. There is so much info in the world that the media had to simplify it. Audiences accept a diluted view of info (fake news eg, how to prevent coronavirus). Our postmodern world means lots of additional info at our fingertips but potentially less meaning/understanding of the world itself.
Turkle - Postmodernism
Technology taking over our world - (Ted talk lady) We’re letting it take over our world. Devices are more psychologically powerful, they change what we do and who we are. - Alone Together.
Watson - Postmodernism
Decline in the sense of community - People are no longer interested in building relations in the real world. They present an ideal image of themselves in the media which might not reflect their identity in real life, a distorted idea of self.
