Posterior triangle of neck Flashcards
Skin of scalp and back of neck is supplied by what nerves?
dorsal rami of spinal nerves C2-C5
SKin of anterior and lateral aspects of neck is supplied by what nerves?
ventral rami of C2-C4 spinal nerves
What are the cutaneous branches of the cervial plexus?
Lesser occipital nerve (C2 or C2, C3)
Great auricular nerve (C2,C3)
Transverse cervical nerve (C2, C3)
Supraclavicular nerves (C3,C4)
Large, flat, thin, muscle embedded in superficial fascia of neck, covers upper parts of pectoralis major and deltoid muscles.
Platysma
Vein that is a superficial structure in the neck, runs vertically. This vein starts below the ear and drains into the subclavian vein. Originates with posterior auricular vein and posterior branch of retromandibular vein.
External Jugular vein
Several small veins under chin (mental region), drains down midline until base of neck where it turns behind the sternocleidomastoid where it goes into external jugular vein.
Anterior Jugular Vein
Muscle with two heads that passes superiorly, posteriorly, and laterally, then inserts into mastoid process.
Sternocleidomastoid
What does sternocleidomastoid muscle do?
Lateral flexion of head and neck to same side as contracting muscle.
What are the boundaries of the posterior triangle of the neck?
Anterior: posterior border of sternocleidomastoid
Posterior: anterior border of trapezius
Inferiorly: 1/3 of clavicle
Floor: Splenius capitis, superficial fascia, platysma, and Scalene muscles
What do scalene muscles do?
They hold your neck up and move your neck
Structures anterior to scalenus anterior:
Subclavian vein, phrenic nerve, cervical and suprascapular arteries, terminal part of thoracic duct on left side. attches to 1st rib
Structures Posterior to scalenus anterior:
Brachial plexus, subclavian artery
What muscle is the longest of the scalene muscles?
Scalenus medius, attaches to 1st rib
What muscle is smallest of scalene muscles?
Scalene posterior attaches to 2nd rib
What muscle has inferior and superior bellies connected with an intermediate tendon?
Omohyoid
