Posterior compartment of the thigh Flashcards
What are the muscles of the Posterior thigh collectively known as?
The hamstring muscles.
What do the group of muscles do?
As group, these muscles act to extend at the hip, and flex at the knee.
What muscles make up the Posterior compartment of the thigh?
They consist of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus and semimembranosus.
Where is the origin of the Biceps Femoris muscle?
The long head; originates from the ischial tuberosity of the pelvis.
The short head; originates from the linea aspera on the posterior surface of the femur.
Where does the Biceps Femoris muscle insert?
Together, the heads form a tendon, which inserts into the head of the fibula.
What is the action of the Biceps Femoris muscle?
Flexion at the knee, Extension at the hip, and Laterally rotates at the hip and knee.
What innervates the Biceps Femoris muscle?
Long head; Tibial part of the sciatic nerve.
Short head; Common fibular part of the sciatic nerve.
Where is the origin of the Semitendinosus muscle?
Ischial tuberosity of the pelvis.
Where does the Semitendinosus muscle insert?
Medial surface of the tibia.
What is the action of the Semitendinosus muscle?
Flexion of the leg at the knee.
Extension of the thigh at the hip.
Medially rotates the thigh at the hip and the leg at the knee joint.
What innervates the Semitendinosus muscle?
Tibial part of the sciatic nerve.
Where is the origin of the Semimembranosus muscle?
Ischial tuberosity, but more superiorly than the semitendinosus and biceps femoris muscles.
Where does the Semimembranosus muscle insert?
Medial tibial condyle.
What are the actions of the Semimembranosus muscle?
Flexion of the leg at the knee.
Extension of the thigh at the hip.
Medially rotates the thigh at the hip joint and the leg at the knee joint.
What innervates the Semimembranosus muscle?
Tibial part of the sciatic nerve.
