Muscles in the anterior compartment of the leg Flashcards
Which muscles make up the Anterior compartment of the leg.
There are four muscles in the anterior compartment of the leg; tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus and fibularis tertius.
What is the collective function of the Anterior compartment of the leg.
Collectively, they act to dorsiflex and invert the foot at the ankle joint. The extensor digitorum longus and extensor hallucis longus also extend the toes.
Where is the origin of Tibialis Anterior?
Originates from the lateral surface of the tibia
Where does Tibialis Anterior insert?
Attaches to the medial cuneiform and the base of metatarsal I.
What are the actions of the Tibialis Anterior?
Dorsiflexion and inversion of the foot.
What innervates Tibialis Anterior?
Deep Fibular nerve.
Where is the origin of Extensor Digitorum Longus
Originates from the lateral condyle of the tibia and the medial surface of the fibula.
Where does Extensor Digitorum Longus insert?
The fibres converge into a tendon, which travels to the dorsal surface of the foot. The tendon splits into four, each inserting onto a toe.
What are the actions of Extensor Digitorum Longus?
Extension of the lateral four toes, and dorsiflexion of the foot
What innervates Extensor Digitorum Longus?
Deep fibular nerve.
Where is the origin of Extensor Hallucis Longus?
Originates from the medial surface of the fibular shaft.
Where does Extensor Hallucis Longus insert?
The tendon crosses anterior to the ankle joint and attaches to the base of the distal phalanx of the great toe.
What are the actions of Extensor Hallucis Longus?
Extension of the Hallux, and dorsiflexion of the foot.
What innervates Extensor Hallucis Longus?
Deep fibular nerve.
Where is the origin of Fibularis Tertius
Originates with the extensor digitorum longus from the medial surface of the fibula.
